Breakfast After the Bell
No child should start the day hungry.
Student who are hungry for food cannot be hungry for knowledge. That is why all Othello schools are proud to implement the Breakfast After the Bell program with the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
What is Breakfast After the Bell?
Breakfast After the Bell (BAB) is an innovative and proven approach to increasing participation and access to school breakfast. By simply shifting breakfast to after the school bell rings and into the classroom, students have higher test scores, better focus, and miss less school.
How will this affect Othello schools?
Othello is just one of many school districts across Washington implementing the program. State law (RCW 28A.235) requires all schools with at least 70% of students eligible for Free or Reduced-Price Meals to implement a BAB program in 2019-20.
Second Chance Breakfast at Othello High School
Othello High School will continue to offer traditional breakfast before school starts, as well as Second Chance Breakfast after 1st period (time TBD). High school students will have the choice to eat traditional breakfast before school, OR grab pre-packaged breakfasts from mobile food service carts after 1st period and bring them to their 2nd period class to eat during the first 10 minutes of class.
Breakfast in the Classroom at All Other Schools
Othello's elementary schools, middle school, and Desert Oasis High School will use the Breakfast in the Classroom model and will eliminate "traditional" breakfast served before school. Breakfast is available to these students after the start of the school day in their classrooms. Students have an opportunity during the first 15 minutes of class to eat breakfast.
