Reimagining Othello Schools

  • There are many exciting things happening within our school district. We have great leaders, teachers, staff, and a loving community to help support our students. Our world is continually evolving and changing at an accelerated pace. Now, students need to be able to ask great questions, critically analyze information, form independent opinions, collaborate, and communicate effectively. In order to ensure that all students are achieving success and graduating with these essential skills to compete with all students across the world…we have work to do!

In order to get us there, our district is implementing an innovative vision that includes the following:

    • A rigorous course of integrated curricula aligned to the Common Core State Standards and Global Competencies that teaches our students to Investigate the World, Recognize Perspectives Different from their Own, Effectively Communicate their Ideas, and to Take Action.
    • Design Thinking
    • Project-Based Learning
    • Pathways
    • STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics)
    • Focused curriculum
    • Ensuring that each student acquires an additional world language
    • Ensuring that each Othello preschool-aged child is equipped and ready to engage in the learning and activities for Kindergarten

Additionally, we will be reconfiguring our schools to a K-8 model. All Othello elementary schools and the middle school will open as kindergarten through 8th grade schools with the start of the 2019-2020 school year. To ensure a smooth transition to these incredible changes, Othello staff and community members will be working together.

    CHANGING TOGETHER

Fear of the unknown is natural; however, we have a choice when it comes to how we respond to changes and challenges. We must persevere through our fears and anxieties by looking forward to the benefits this will bring to Othello’s students. Here’s how we’re going to do it…

    Information & Resources

Change is easier to handle when we are equipped with information and resources that help us prepare and plan for what’s ahead. Othello School District has developed this Reimagining Othello Schools webpage to house information and updates about the Vision and K-8 transformation. This page will continue to expand and evolve with access to new resources and updates on opportunities to contribute and share feedback.

    Opportunities for Feedback

We strongly encourage community members to become involved in the transformation process and share their voice by joining our Research & Study teams. The purpose of these teams is to:

    1. Examine each aspect of reimagining our schools;
    2. Build capacity across the community that will support this shift; and
    3. Ensure a smooth transition and full implementation by the 2019-2020 school year.

Community members will be placed in Research & Study team as follows:

    • K-8 reconfiguration
    • Global Competencies
    • World Languages
    • STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics)
    • Design Thinking
    • Pathways
    • Essential Skills
    • Project-Based Learning
    • Birth - K (Early Literacy)
    • Parent Engagement

We are extremely excited about our direction and future opportunities for our students. We invite you to stay tuned and to join us on this journey!
