Comprehensive Sexual Health Education Curriculum Review
More than 40 parents, teachers, and community members attended a curriculum review night on October 18th. The event was an opportunity for those interested to review proposed Comprehensive Sexual Health Education curriculum materials that will be presented to the Board of Directors for adoption. Attendees were given a brief presentation followed by an opportunity to ask questions and to look at the proposed materials hands-on.
The Second Step curriculum is being considered for adoption for grades K-3. It focuses on social-emotional learning. "There is no sexuality or sex education component in kindergarten through third grade," said Jennifer Garza, Director of Birth to Five.
"Nothing will change for the other grade levels except that juniors and seniors will receive additional instruction time in the FLASH curriculum, which is already in use," said Amy Parris, Director of School to Career.
Garza and Parris led a committed made up of teachers, parents, and community members. "We started meeting last spring to review state law, determine goals, and to select K-3 curriculum that meshes with our community values. I want to thank the committee members for their work," said Parris.
The curriculum will be presented to the board of directors for adoption at an upcoming board meeting.
