2020-21 School Meal Information
Starting January 19th, meal service during Othello School District’s blended learning model has changed. Students will no longer eat their meals at school. Instead, students in both the morning and afternoon groups will be sent home with their breakfast and lunch for the following day. This change is necessary as we have found that meal times (service and consumption) are taking up a significant portion of our shortened instructional days. Eating in classrooms is also considered a higher COVID risk activity, because students must remove their masks.
The switch provides the following benefits:
- It allows us to provide more in-person instructional time during the shortened blended learning schedules.
- It reduces the potential for congregation of larger groups of students in hallways when classes walk to and through the cafeteria and back to their classes.
- It improves safety in our classrooms by eliminating the need for students to remove their masks to eat.
- It reduces the amount of time our custodial staff must spend on cleaning up from meal service, leaving them more time to devote to properly cleaning and sanitizing schools each day.
We understand that, particularly for some of our rural students who have longer bus rides, this change means that students may experience a longer time between meals. Students should eat their breakfast or lunch as close to their bus pickup time as possible, before coming to school. Unfortunately, for health and safety reasons, we cannot allow meals to be eaten on buses.
This new meal service model should not cause most students to experience a longer time between meals versus our traditional meal service. During normal instructional time, many of our students eat lunch as early as 10:40 each day and then attend classes for the rest of the normal school day before traveling home.
Our highest priorities are providing all of our students with a high quality education, and ensuring their safety and wellbeing at the same time. Blended learning means that our in-person instructional time is reduced by half. Thank you for your understanding as we work to find the best possible balance.
With students coming back to campuses for in-person instruction, we will be making changes to our meal delivery and distribution plans.
Friday, January 8th will be the last day of meal distribution by transportation staff. After Friday, meals will no longer be distributed on bus routes.
On Monday, January 11th, meals will be available for pickup at all school sites EXCEPT Wahitis and DOHS from 11 a.m. to noon.
January 19th through 22nd meal pick up will only be available at OHS from 11 a.m. to noon.
From January 25th until further notice meal distribution will only be available at OHS from 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Students who attend in person will be served breakfast and lunch at their schools.
