First Semester Wahitis House Champion
Wahitis Elementary School can’t wait for families to join our students and staff on Monday, November 26th when we reveal our “House Champion”! The celebration takes place during an assembly beginning at 2:30 PM at Wahitis. Both competitive and collaborative, our first semester school-wide activity to sort all students and staff into “houses” will reach its mid-year culmination when the winning house with the most points is revealed during the 30-minute ceremony.
Wahitis Elementary Assistant Principal Sandy Anderson first dreamt up the community-building idea with her colleagues during the summer of 2018. House sorting at Wahitis combines the similar, well-known scenes from the world of “Harry Potter” with the acclaimed Ron Clark Academy methodology that seeks to “foster an atmosphere where students, parents, staff, and community members work together to create a family environment for our learners.”
From the first day of school on August 23rd, every student in every grade level at Wahitis Elementary was sorted into one of four “houses” based on the school’s motto of GRIT: Game Changers, Risk Takers, Innovators, and Thrivers. Wahitis teachers and staff cheered students on during the kickoff assembly on the first day of school while each student danced down a red carpet after discovering his or her house. To sort students evenly into the four houses across kindergarten through 6th grade, each student came to the front and drew a card with a QR code printed. They would scan the card and the name of the house would be projected onto the big screen for all to see.
“It was like one big party and just so much fun,” says Assistant Principal Anderson as she recalled the kickoff assembly. “Our goal here is to build stronger relationships inside the school and across grade levels so that there is a deep sense of family and belonging that extends beyond the classroom.”
As the first semester of school has progressed at Wahitis, students and staff have worked across grade levels to earn points for their houses through fun team-building activities and challenges. Each Wednesday at Wahitis is a “House Day,” as is the last Monday of every month. Students earn points not only through activities and challenges, but also for being “caught” demonstrating positive GRIT behavior.
While there are posters in the school cafeteria indicating the weekly point accruals for each house, the November 26th assembly holds the first big count day, with the winning House Champion to receive a popcorn party and major bragging rights. House Championship celebrations will take place again on February 25th and May 20th.
Family members are encouraged to join their students during the Wahitis House Championship at 2:30 PM on Monday, November 26. (Ask your student about what color you should be wearing to represent his/her house!) To learn more about the Wahitis House System, please feel free to call the school at 509-764-1200.
