Breakfast After the Bell
No child should start the day hungry.
Students who are hungry for food can't be hungry for knowledge -- that's why all Othello schools proudly participate in the Breakfast After the Bell (BAB) program. This innovative approach makes breakfast part of the school day, ensuring students start the morning ready to learn.
What is Breakfast After the Bell?
Breakfast After the Bell is a proven way to increase student access to a healthy breakfast. Instead of only serving breakfast before school starts, BAB makes it available after the school day begins, so more students can participate.
Benefits of BAB include:
- Higher test scores
- Better focus in class
- Improved attendance
Washington State Law (RCW 28A.235) requires all schools with 70% or more students eligible for Free or Reduced-Price Meals to offer BAB. Othello began implementing the program district-wide in the 2019-2020 school year.
How It Works in Othello Schools
Othello High School -- Second Chance Breakfast
- Option 1: Traditional breakfast before school starts
- Option 2: Second Chance Breakfast after 1st period
- Pre-packaged breakfasts available from mobile carts
- Students take breakfast to 2nd period and eat during the first 10 minutes of class
All Other OSD Schools - Breakfast in the Classroom
- Breakfast is served after the school day starts, in the classroom
- Traditional breakfast before school is no longer served
