Supporting Students in Transition

Stability. Support. Success.

Othello School District is committed to supporting students and families who are experiencing short-term, temporary, or transitional housing situations -- including homelessness. Our goal is to provide educational continuity, stability, and access to critical resources.

Who Qualifies?

Under the McKinney-Vento Act, any child or youth -- including unaccompanied youth -- who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence is considered homeless and is eligible for support services.

This includes students who are:

  • Sharing housing with others due to loss of housing or economic hardship
  • Living in motels, hotels, cars, parks, campgrounds, or emergency shelters
  • Residing in transitional housing programs
  • Temporarily displaced and without a permanent home

Services & Support We Provide

If your child qualifies under the McKinney-Vento Act, they are eligible for resources to help reduce barriers to school attendance and success, including:

  • Continued attendance at their school of origin
  • Transportation assistance to and from school
  • Free school meals (breakfast & lunch)
  • School supplies and backpacks
  • Clothing vouchers
  • Referrals to health care, counseling, and academic support
  • Help obtaining school records, immunization documents, and more

Planning Ahead

If your family is at risk of losing permanent housing, please notify your child's school as early as possible. We'll work with you to keep your child in their current school when possible -- or help connect you with the right support services.
